Rapid restoration of flood damage at the Baltic Sea
First load of Naue Secutex® Soft Rock sand containers was picked up yesterday.
The consequences of the storm surge on the beach and coastal areas of the Baltic Sea in Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are devastating. The media are peppered with images showing washed-out streets, damaged buildings and devastated beach areas. The cleanup and restoration work is in full swing in order to provide citizens with a safe home again as quickly as possible and, in perspective, to be able to resume tourism operations in 2024.
Yesterday, an emergency vehicle from Schleswig-Holstein set out to pick up about 800 sand containers from our location in Espelkamp. These will first be needed in the small town of Arnis on the Schlei. There, a dike broke along a length of 50 meters and soil masses in the contact area of the dike were eroded. The water flooded the small town to such an extent that the approximately 300 citizens had to be evacuated and the town closed.
The Secutex® Soft Rock sand containers developed by Naue were procured on the initiative of the LKN Schleswig-Holstein and are already being installed by the helpers in Arnis. The aim is a fast and at the same time safe rehabilitation of the damaged dike. The Soft Rock sand containers are filled on site and placed to secure the eroded base of the dike. Subsequent overtopping allows the structure to remain in the dike, providing storm surge protection for future events.
Secutex® Soft Rock are geotextile sandbags or containers made of needled Secutex® nonwoven filter fabric. They are used to encapsulate earthworks materials and as construction elements. In addition to single-layer nonwovens for protected applications, there are also double-layer nonwovens that offer integrated surface protection and blend well visually into sandy environments.
