Roads and civil engineering

Reinforcement, stabilisation, drainage and sealing for infrastructure

From paved and unpaved roads to embankments on soft ground, retaining walls, bridge abutments, structural drainage and groundwater sealing, Naue supplies the geosynthetic solution for each of these areas.

Naue’s Secugrid® and Combigrid® geogrids, Secumat® erosion control mats, Secudrain® drainage composites and Carbofol®/Bentofix® liners extend service life and lower lifecycle cost, all backed by full conformity documentation.

Temporary access roads and haul roads

Temporary access and haul road stabilisation creates load-bearing unpaved surfaces on weak subsoils. Secugrid® geogrids and Combigrid® geocomposites distribute loads, reduce rutting and aggregate use, and maintain surface integrity during construction or operation.

Reinforcement and stabilisation of paved roads

Paved road stabilisation and reinforcement uses geosynthetic layers in the unbound base or subbase to extend service life and reduce maintenance. Secugrid® and Combigrid® distribute traffic loads, reduce structural strain and help prevent rutting, cracking and premature failure.

Soft ground construction

Soft ground construction involves building embankments, roads and structures on weak or compressible soils. Secugrid® and Combigrid® distribute loads, control settlement and maintain structural integrity in line with international standards.

Slope stabilisation and protection

Slope stabilisation and protection uses geosynthetic systems to resist sliding, mass movement and erosion. Inadequate stabilisation can damage infrastructure, the environment and properties. Secugrid®, Secumat®, Naue Nail and Naue Steel P deliver vegetated slope solutions from 30° to 85°.

Retaining walls and reinforced earth structures

Reinforced earth retaining walls and MSE structures create stable, steep or near-vertical embankments without concrete. Secugrid® and Combigrid® reinforce compacted soil, delivering equivalent load capacity at significantly lower cost.

Groundwater protection

Groundwater protection for roads seals embankments, cut slopes and drainage zones to prevent runoff, fuel spills and de-icing salts from contaminating soil and groundwater. Carbofol® geomembranes and Bentofix® GCLs create a durable barrier system.

Structural drainage

Structural drainage with geosynthetics collects and discharges groundwater, gas and seepage water from civil engineering structures. Secudrain® geocomposites replace granular drainage aggregate with a slim, high-performance system for reliable long-term flow.

Geogrid-reinforced bridge abutments

Geogrid-reinforced bridge abutments use the RSS method to create a ductile reinforced-soil body instead of massive concrete. Secugrid® geogrids and fill distribute earth pressure and loads, minimising settlement, bump effects and joint damage while reducing time and costs.

Roads and civil engineering: frequently asked questions

Secugrid® and Combigrid® geogrids interlock with the aggregate to distribute traffic loads, reducing rutting and required layer thickness. This extends pavement life, cuts aggregate volumes and lowers whole-life maintenance costs on both paved and unpaved roads.

Yes. Geogrid-reinforced base courses and basal reinforcement distribute loads over very soft subgrades, controlling settlement and enabling construction where unreinforced solutions would fail or require costly soil replacement.

Reinforced-soil abutments built with Secugrid® are ductile, tolerate differential settlement, are faster and cheaper to construct than massive concrete abutments, and have been proven on reference projects such as the Prüm bridge in Minden.

Layers of Secugrid® or Combigrid® reinforcement are placed within compacted fill to create a mechanically stabilised earth mass that retains steep or vertical faces, replacing reinforced concrete with a flexible, durable, lower-cost structure.

Secudrain® geocomposites provide a high, defined in-plane flow capacity in a thin layer, replacing thick granular drainage layers behind walls, tunnels and basements. This saves space and aggregate and delivers reliable, long-term groundwater control.

In water protection zones, Carbofol® HDPE geomembranes and Bentofix® GCLs seal the subgrade and embankment so that road run-off and spillages cannot reach groundwater, in compliance with the RiStWag guideline. For more information please see our solutions for groundwater protection.
