Secumat® Green Coco Coir erosion control mat

Secumat® Green Coco coir erosion control is a biodegradable* slope protection, trench and brook lining and renaturation.

  • Secumat® Green Coco is a biodegradable* coir erosion control mat, net and roll system for temporary slope and channel protection.
  • Coir fibres intercept raindrops, slow run-off and retain soil while creating a microclimate for vegetation; the structure also acts as a coarse filter.
  • Variants: Secumat® Green Coco N (net: 400 / 700 / 900 g/m²) · Secumat® Green Coco M (mat: 450 g/m²) · Secumat® Green Coco R (roll: 30 cm diameter)
  • Tensile strength: 4.2 to 19.2 kN/m (MD, DIN EN ISO 10319) - varies by variant
  • Certifications: TÜV Austria: OK compost (Home & Industrial), OK biodegradable (Soil, Water, Marine).

Secumat® Green Coco is a coir erosion control system for temporary slope and trench protection. You install it directly on exposed soil surfaces. The coconut fibres intercept raindrop impact, delay surface run-off and create a protected microhabitat for seeds to germinate. Vegetation roots grow through the open structure and vegetate permanently in the topsoil.

Newly graded slopes and disturbed trenches lose topsoil rapidly during the first growing season. Without protection, rainfall strips seed and fine soil before roots can establish. Secumat® Green Coco solves this. The biodegradable* coir system absorbs rain energy, holds soil particles in place and provides the vegetation exactly the time it needs.

Secumat® Green Coco eliminates costly re-seeding cycles. No deconstruction or disposal is required: the system biodegrades* fully once vegetation is established. A uniformly high quality is ensured due to the continuous mechanical production method. Project budgets benefit from lower total installed cost compared to synthetic erosion control systems that require removal after use.

Coco N variants provide tensile strengths from 9.9 kN/m (N 400) to 19.2 kN/m (N 900) MD per DIN EN ISO 10319. Shadowing ratios of 40 % to 80 % allow variant selection to match vegetation establishment timelines. The Coco R 30 roll (diameter 30 cm, density 125 kg/m³) acts as a sill in water bodies to reduce flow velocity and trap sediment. Secumat® Green Coco R can also support biodiversity in urban environments, providing habitats for small organisms such as insects.

Application areas

Typical applications:

  • Vegetating dykes and flood embankments during initial greening phase
  • Erosion control on road and railway embankment slopes
  • Securing and vegetating cut slopes on infrastructure projects
  • Slope protection on sports facilities and public green spaces

Secumat® Green Coco is a coir erosion control mat for slope protection during the critical period between soil preparation and full vegetation establishment. Installed directly on the slope surface, the coir net intercepts raindrop kinetic energy, preventing rill erosion and seed wash-out. The variable and sliding mesh structure of the Coco N variants creates protected niches where seedlings establish rapidly. On steeper gradients above 35 degrees, the Coco N 900 variant provides the highest shadowing ratio (80 %) and tensile strength (19.2 kN/m MD). Slopes up to 40 degrees are covered by the Coco M 450 mat, whose thick coir-jute structure retains moisture for up to 36 months. Coir decomposition enriches soil nutrient content, supporting biodiversity on completed slopes.

Advantages:

  • No deconstruction after use: the mat biodegrades* as vegetation matures
  • Suitable for slope gradients above 35 degrees (Coco N) and above 40 degrees (Coco M)
  • Fast installation with roll width 2.0–2.4 m and roll length 50 m
  • Supports biodiversity by enriching soil nutrient content through coir decomposition

To the application:

Typical applications:

  • Water edges and trench slopes during initial vegetation phase
  • Sediment and sand trap installation with Coco R 30 georoll
  • Bank renaturation and restoration of disturbed watercourses
  • Flow reduction sills (bed sills) in trenches with medium flow velocities
  • Rapid scour repair in trenches and brooks

Secumat® Green Coco provides biodegradable erosion control for the water-land transition zone in trenches and brooks. The Coco N variants - Hydraulic Erosion Control Products (HECPs) - protect embankments during the greening phase, while the Coco R 30 georoll acts as a low bed sill: it reduces flow velocity, acts as a sediment trap immediately upon installation and supports bank renaturation. The roll structure (30 cm diameter, density 125 kg/m³, 50 mm x 50 mm mesh) allows water to drain through while retaining fine soil particles and suspended sediment. Coco R 30 - Sediment Retention Fiber Rolls (SRFRs) - can be installed perpendicular to flow direction in trenches, parallel on trench slopes, or stacked to form a package of rolls. It must be structurally secured against shifting and floating under alternating hydraulic loads by means of stakes and ropes/cables. SRFRs are also known as "wattles." SRFRs slow and spread runoff, reducing sediment entering retention ponds, lakes and other water bodies. This makes Secumat® Green Coco a suitable solution for watercourses in protected areas, where synthetic materials may require additional environmental assessment.

Advantages:

  • Coco R 30 works as sediment trap from day one of installation
  • Service life up to 60 months (Coco R) allows vegetation full establishment time
  • No synthetic fibres are released into the watercourse
  • Compact roll size (0.3 m x 3 m, 25.5 kg) enables installation in confined channel spaces
  • Flexible - suitable for curved installation in meandering channels

Coir erosion control mat shadowing ratio: why it matters beyond tensile strength

Secumat® Green Coco is built around one insight: the shadowing ratio, not tensile strength alone, governs how fast vegetation establishes and how long protection is needed.

A low ratio (Coco N 400: approx. 40 %) maximises light - roots establish within 12 to 18 months. A high ratio (Coco N 900: approx. 80 %) retains moisture and protects more densely on fine-grained soils prone to rill erosion, where cover is needed for up to 24 months. Thread thickness reinforces this: 4.0 mm (40 x 35 threads/m) for N 400, 5.0 mm (70 x 60 threads/m) for N 900, whose denser weave raises tensile strength to 19.2 kN/m MD versus 9.9 kN/m (DIN EN ISO 10319) - N 700 or N 900 for slopes above 35° or higher flow velocities.

Coco M 450 uses a 10 mm coir inlay quilted in jute as a moisture reservoir, releasing absorbed water with a delay, reducing evaporation and extending functional life to 36 months - decisive on south-facing slopes and in dry summers.

Coco R georolls degrade slowly (compact design, high lignin content), lasting up to 60 months and acting as a sediment trap from installation - placed perpendicular to the flow in trenches, parallel on trench slopes or along the slope edge.

Unlike synthetic mats, Secumat® Green Coco biodegrades* fully to CO₂, water and biomass - suited to protected watercourses, organic farming and renaturation projects.

Frequently asked questions

Secumat® Green Coco is a coir erosion control net for temporary slope and trench protection. You install it on exposed soil surfaces. Coconut fibres intercept raindrop impact, slow surface run-off and support vegetation establishment. The fibre structure also acts as a separating and coarse filter layer. The mat biodegrades* fully once the vegetation is established.

Pricing for Secumat® Green Coco N 900 depends on project quantity, roll dimensions and delivery region. Contact Naue for a project-specific quote.

Choose Secumat® Green Coco when the installation must be certified biodegradable*: renaturation projects, protected watercourses, organic sites or where no plastic residue is permitted. Choose Secumat® ClassicLine (PP, permanent) for long-term erosion control on steep slopes or hydraulic structures where permanent reinforcement is needed.

Use Coco N (net) on slopes where light penetration and quick seed germination are the priority. Choose N 400 for gentle slopes with short establishment times (12 months) or N 900 for steep or heavily eroded slopes requiring up to 24 months protection. Use Coco M (mat) where moisture retention is critical: south-facing slopes or dry climates, up to 36 months, slopes > 40 degrees, minimal maintenance required. Use Coco R (roll) in water bodies as a flow-reducing bed sill or sediment trap, with up to 60 months service life. Coco R can also be installed on slopes parallel to the slope edge. We recommend combining Coco R with Coco M or N for comprehensive trench protection.

Shadowing ratio controls how much light reaches the soil surface. A high ratio (Coco N 900: 80 %) retains moisture and extends protection time on difficult slopes. Tensile strength determines suitability for steep gradients or high-velocity channels. For most slopes, matching the shadowing ratio to the expected vegetation establishment time is the critical specification decision.

Secumat® Green Coco is made only from natural coir and jute fibres. Secumat® Green Coco biodegrades* to CO₂, water and biomass.
