Secutex® Soft Rock APAC: geotextile sand containers | Naue

Secutex^® Soft Rock is a geotextile sand container (GSC) for coastal protection, scour protection, riverbank stabilisation and land reclamation.
The container is filled on site with locally available sand. It provides filter and ballast function in a single element: the nonwoven retains fine particles and absorbs wave energy without hard armour.
Double-seam technology along three sides of every container — the APAC standard construction for maximum seam durability under wave and abrasion loading.
Pre-manufactured filling ports (1 FP or 2 FP) made from 400 g/m² nonwoven, plus cords and pre-cut holes for closing. No sewing machines or compressors required on site.

Secutex^® Soft Rock is a geotextile sand container system for coastal protection, scour protection and riverbank stabilisation. Filled on site with locally available sand, the needle-punched nonwoven encases the fill material while providing both filter and ballast function. Fine soil particles are retained, while wave and flow energy is absorbed rather than reflected — in many applications without the need for conventional armour stone.

Challenge

Rising sea levels, intensifying monsoon and cyclone seasons and increasing coastal development are placing sustained hydraulic loading on shorelines, waterways and marine infrastructure across the Asia-Pacific region. Where water flow, waves or currents act on unprotected soil, fine particles are mobilised and transported away. Over time this leads to surface erosion, scour formation, instability of banks and structures, and progressive land loss.

Conventional rock armour revetments are the established answer — but across much of the region, suitable armour stone is not locally available. Quarrying, barging and placing rock is costly, carries a high transport-related carbon load, and produces a rigid, hard-edged structure that is unsuitable for tourism beaches and difficult to adapt to soft, variable seabeds.

Solution

Secutex^® Soft Rock provides an alternative revetment element based on sand-filled geotextile containers. The containers are filled with locally available sand, help retain soil, stabilise the exposed surface and reduce hydraulic impact.

For the Asia-Pacific region the containers are manufactured with double-seam technology along three sides, giving a substantially more robust closure than a single-seam construction under repeated wave attack and abrasion. Filling ports are factory-fitted and retractable; the container is closed on site with cords through pre-cut holes, so no sewing machine, compressor or specialist crew is required at the waterline.

Both Grand grades are supplied with rounded edges to prevent fluttering under wave attack, and both carry a factory-attached scour flap (Secutex^® R 601, 3.05 m × 2.60 m) on the longitudinal side to protect the container toe against developing scour.

Result

Sourcing fill locally reduces the demand for quarried rock, simplifies logistics and shortens installation windows. The soft, rounded containers are safe to walk on — including barefoot — and blend visually into sandy environments, which makes them suitable for public beaches and recreation zones where rock armour would be rejected on amenity grounds.

Secutex^® Soft Rock Grand RS 1201 delivers tensile strength of 60.0 kN/m md/cmd (ASTM D4595 / AS 3706.2), a factory seam tensile strength of 50.0 kN/m before and after abrasion (EN ISO 10321 / AS 3706.6), abrasion residual strength ≥ 85 % (BAW rotating drum) and characteristic opening size O₉₀ = 60 µm (EN ISO 12956). Design life for oxidation: 100 years (ISO TS 13434).

Secutex^® Soft Rock is preferred where local sand is available, soft substrates are present, underwater installation is required, or the structure has to remain safe and walkable for public access. It is also the practical answer wherever suitable armour stone would have to be quarried and shipped over long distances. Rock armour suits very high-energy wave environments where maximum individual unit mass is needed.

R 601 (approx. 0.4 m³) and R 801 (approx. 1.2 m³) are single-layer containers for sheltered and covered applications: inner riverbanks, canal rehabilitation, dune cores as a last barrier against breakthrough, harbour scour protection. The two Grand grades are for exposed applications — open coastline, wave-exposed revetments, offshore scour protection. Both are double-layer, both fill to approx. 2.5 m³, both have rounded edges and a factory-attached scour flap, and both reach abrasion residual strength ≥ 85 % and 50.0 kN/m factory seam strength before and after abrasion. Grand RS 1201 (1,200 g/m²) is the standard exposed grade; Grand RS 1601 (1,600 g/m²) adds a heavier filter layer of approx. 1,000 g/m², tensile strength of 65.0/70.0 kN/m and CBR of 13,500 N for the most severe wave, rock-contact and handling loads.

The seam is the part of the container with the lowest tensile strength. Where stress concentrates — during lifting, filling and placement — it becomes the predetermined breaking point. This is why containers for Australia and Asia are built with a double seam along three sides. For the Grand grades, factory seam tensile strength is 50.0 kN/m (EN ISO 10321 / AS 3706.6), verified before and after abrasion. Always verify seam strength and abrasion residual values, not fabric tensile alone.
