Sand containers

Secutex® Soft Rock for coastal protection and hydraulic engineering

Naue Secutex® Soft Rock containers are sand-filled geotextile units for coastal protection, riverbank stabilisation, scour protection and hydraulic engineering. They are flexible, durable alternatives to revetment systems with riprap and concrete blockwork, with proven performance worldwide.

Sand containers: frequently asked questions

A geotextile sand container is a geotextile unit filled with locally sourced sand. Its dimensions, volume and weight are designed to withstand site-specific wave and current loads. Geotextile sand containers can be used to construct revetments, provide a final line of defence against dune breaching, protect against scour, and form groynes or breakwater cores.

Unit size is calculated from the hydraulic loads - wave height, current velocity – using the Naue SoftRock design tool (NauePortal). Calculations are based on the Coastal Protection Regulations for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: Longshore Structures and Geotextile Walls, published by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Environment and Consumer Protection.

Secutex® Soft Rock sand containers are designed for service lives of 50 years and longer under protected environmental conditions. For exposed environmental conditions the durability can be assessed taking e.g. submerged or UV exposure conditions into account. Naue’s Engineering & Design Department (EDD) provides project-specific durability assessments.

Yes. Naue Soft Rock sand containers are vegetation-friendly and integrate with dune, mudflat and tropical-coast habitats. Vegetated cover further protects the geotextile against UV exposure.

The empty unit is attached to a stable filling frame with a filling funnel and filled step by step with sand through its open side. Once a fill ratio of at least 90% is reached, the opening is completely closed on site using a sewing machine with a double chain stitch or with a toll-free closing technique. Naue supplies a detailed handling, closing and installation guideline.

Yes. Pre-fabricated units enable emergency closures, levee reinforcement and scour protection within days – an advantage that is well documented from flood events in Europe and Asia.

In our NauePortal, the design tool “Naue SofftRock” provides stability calculations for geotextile sand container solutions used in coastal protection, riverbank erosion protection, and scour protection applications. Calculations are based on the Coastal Protection Regulations for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: Longshore Structures and Geotextile Walls, published by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Environment and Consumer Protection. The tool is available free of charge after registration at www.naue.com.
