Mining

Geosynthetic lining, containment, reinforcement and closure systems

Across the mining life cycle - tailings storage, heap leach pads, evaporation ponds, haul roads and final closure - Naue supplies the geosynthetic solution for each area. Naue’s Carbofol® HDPE and LLDPE geomembranes, Bentofix® GCLs, Secutex®, Secudrain® and Secugrid® contain chemically aggressive process solutions, stabilise heavy-haul ground and form certified capping and rehabilitation covers, all conforming to EN ISO 10318 with full conformity documentation.

Mining and geosynthetics

Mining geosynthetics are engineered materials used across mining operations. They address haul roads on soft subgrades, safe tailings containment and long-term environmental protection after closure. Secugrid®, Combigrid®, Carbofol®, Bentofix® and Secutex® provide proven, compliant solutions.

Heap leaching

Heap leach pad lining prevents leach solutions from seeping into the ground. Carbofol® HDPE/LLDPE, Bentofix® GCLs and Secutex® provide primary and secondary containment. LLDPE suits settlement; HDPE offers higher chemical resistance.

Tailings

Tailings management covers engineered containment, sealing and long-term storage of processing waste in TSFs. Uncontrolled leachate and berm failure pose environmental and reputational risks. Carbofol®, Bentofix®, Secutex®, Secudrain® and Secugrid® support TSFs from base lining to closure capping.

Evaporation ponds

Evaporation pond lining in mining uses geosynthetic barriers to contain process fluids, brines and pregnant solutions. Unlined ponds risk seepage into soil and groundwater. Carbofol® HDPE geomembranes and Bentofix® GCLs provide resistant containment for copper, lithium, gold and salt mining.

Mine closure

Mine closure and rehabilitation permanently isolate contaminated mining zones with engineered geosynthetics. Tailings and sediments threaten groundwater and ecosystems. Carbofol®, Bentofix®, Secudrain® and Secutex® provide compliant containment and capping from single to composite double-liners.

Access roads and structures

Mining haul roads are access routes for heavy transport in open-cast and underground mines. Repeated loading causes rutting and surface deterioration on weak or variable subgrades. Secugrid® geogrids and Combigrid® geocomposites stabilise the base course, distribute loads and extend service life.

Mining: frequently asked questions

Carbofol® HDPE and LLDPE geomembranes provide high chemical resistance to acidic and alkaline leach solutions, brines and heavy-metal-laden liquors. Bentofix® GCLs add a self-sealing mineral barrier. For divalent-cation-rich or aggressive media, the PE-coated Bentofix® X protects the bentonite core from ion exchange.

Heap leach pads require a chemically resistant, mechanically robust primary barrier (Carbofol® HDPE/LLDPE), often over a secondary GCL barrier (Bentofix®), with Secutex® protection and Secudrain® solution-collection drainage. The system must withstand ore loading, aggressive lixiviants and long irrigation cycles.

Secugrid® and Combigrid® geogrids reinforce the base course over weak or variable subgrade, distributing the loads of dump trucks and loaders. This reduces rutting, lowers aggregate demand and extends the maintenance interval of unpaved haul roads.

Closure uses a certified capping system - typically Bentofix® GCL and/or Carbofol® geomembrane, Secudrain® drainage and Secutex® protection under a restoration cover - to control infiltration, isolate contaminants and enable long-term revegetation.

Yes. Products conform to EN ISO 10318 and carry the relevant international approvals; Carbofol® geomembranes hold BAM assessment and documented long service life. Project-specific certification and design support are provided by the Naue Engineering & Design Department.

Yes. A Bentofix® GCL replaces roughly a metre of compacted clay with a layer only 7–15 mm thick, eliminating the need to source, haul and place large volumes of low-permeability clay that is often unavailable on remote mine sites.
