Detailed information

What you will learn

  • Understand how waves, currents and sediment transport shape sandy coasts and which processes can intensify coastal erosion.
  • Identify the site conditions, hydraulic loads and protection requirements that need to be considered when selecting a coastal protection system.
  • Understand how geotextile sand containers are constructed, the functions they perform and the key factors involved in their design and dimensioning.
  • Assess different approaches to beach and dune protection using field trials and completed projects – from long-term protection systems to temporary bio-based solutions.

Who should attend?

This webinar is aimed at professionals from engineering and design consultancies, hydraulic and coastal engineering, and geotechnical engineering, as well as authorities, asset owners and contractors involved in planning, assessing or implementing coastal protection measures along sandy coasts.

About the webinar

Sandy coasts are constantly reshaped by waves, currents and sediment transport. During storm surges, these processes can intensify significantly, changing beaches and dunes within a short period of time. Coastal protection therefore needs to address not only hydraulic loads, but also the specific conditions at each site.

At the heart of the webinar is a practical question: what protection function is required at a particular location, and which approach is best suited to it? We look at geotextile sand containers as flexible elements for erosion protection and explain the key principles behind their construction, planning and dimensioning.

We will also explore the role temporary bio-based solutions can play in dune stabilisation. Field trials and selected coastal protection projects illustrate how different systems can be matched to the required service period, site loads and the intended development of beaches and dunes.

Yes. During the live webinar, you will have the opportunity to ask the speaker questions. These will be addressed during the questions and answers session scheduled at the end of the presentation.

Key factors for selecting a coastal protection system include hydraulic loading, coastal geometry, sediment conditions, the required protection function and the intended service period. Together, these site-specific conditions determine which approach is suitable for a particular stretch of coastline.

Geotextile sand containers can be filled with sand and used as flexible elements for erosion protection. Depending on the system, they can provide ballast, filtration and separation functions. Their size, arrangement and design need to be matched to the hydraulic loads and site conditions.
