Landfill engineering

It is an engineered barrier installed beneath a waste cell to prevent leachate migrating into subsoil and groundwater. A compliant system typically combines a Bentofix^® GCL mineral barrier, a Carbofol^® HDPE primary seal, a Secutex^® protection geotextile and a mineral drainage layer for leachate collection.

For most regulated landfill classes (particularly Class II and III under EU Directive 1999/31/EC) a composite system combining a GCL and an HDPE geomembrane is required. Inert or lower-classification sites may accept a single GCL layer subject to local regulations.

A capping (surface sealing) system is placed over the completed waste body to keep out infiltrating rainwater, control landfill gas and support restoration. It combines a sealing barrier (Bentofix^® and/or Carbofol^®), Secudrain^® drainage and Secutex^® protection beneath a restoration cover.

It is a sealing layer installed between two stacked waste bodies. It acts simultaneously as the surface seal of the completed lower cell and the base seal of the new cell above, allowing a landfill to be extended vertically without compromising containment.

Yes. Carbofol^® HDPE geomembranes hold BAM approval for landfill use in Germany; Bentofix^® GCLs hold LAGA certificates of suitability for the relevant landfill classes. All products conform to EN ISO 10318 and EN 13257 and carry CE marking where required.

A Bentofix^® GCL provides sealing performance equivalent to about a metre of compacted clay in a 7–15 mm layer, eliminating costly clay import and haulage, speeding installation and increasing the available cell volume.
