Naue PavedRoad - AASHTO

Optimised flexible pavement design

Naue PavedRoad - AASHTO is a free online calculator in the Naue Portal DesignSuite for designing flexible (asphalt) pavements to the AASHTO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures (1993). Engineers enter their traffic, serviceability and layer data and receive an AASHTO-compliant pavement design. By integrating the measured performance of Secugrid® geogrids and Combigrid® geocomposites, PavedRoad shows two clear improvements for the same inputs: a reduced unbound aggregate base thickness and an extended pavement service life. The method is widely used in the USA and Canada, and anywhere AASHTO guidelines apply.

At a glance

  • What it is: a free online calculator in the Naue Portal DesignSuite (login required)
  • What it does: designs flexible pavements to AASHTO 1993, including the base-layer benefit of Secugrid® and Combigrid®
  • Best for: roads and trafficked areas in the USA, Canada and other markets applying AASHTO guidelines
  • Key inputs: unit system (imperial/metric); traffic (ESAL); reliability R; standard error S0; initial/terminal serviceability p0/pt; asphalt and base layer thicknesses, layer and drainage coefficients; subgrade CBR or Mr; optimisation strategy
  • Key outputs: an AASHTO-compliant layer design; reduced unbound base thickness and/or extended service life with geogrid; a graphical cross-section of the build-up; a downloadable report
  • Two design goals: cost optimisation or service-life optimisation

From AASHTO inputs to a leaner pavement: how PavedRoad delivers

Challenges

  • Meeting the strict AASHTO 1993 requirements reliably
  • Thick unbound base layers drive material cost and CO₂
  • Proving the benefit of geogrid stabilisation in the design

Naue solution

  • An AASHTO 1993 calculator that builds the measured performance of Secugrid® and Combigrid® into the structural design

Results

  • A reliable, AASHTO-compliant pavement design
  • Reduced unbound layer thickness at equal capacity - or extended service life
  • Lower material cost and CO₂, with a downloadable report

Where PavedRoad – AASHTO helps: applications covered

Naue PavedRoad - AASHTO is used wherever a flexible pavement is designed to AASHTO guidelines and where a stabilised, geogrid-reinforced base can reduce aggregate use or extend service life.

  • Highways & classified Roads: AASHTO-compliant flexible pavement design for public road networks.
  • Heavily trafficked areas: durable designs for high-load pavements and hardstandings.
  • Industrial & logistics yards: optimised layer design for yards, ports and container areas.
  • Access & haul roads: paved access routes on projects and industrial sites.
  • Soft subgrade sites: base stabilisation with Secugrid®/Combigrid® over weak subgrades.

How PavedRoad - AASHTO works: input, geogrid benefit and report

A guided form collects the AASHTO design parameters and returns an optimised pavement - with the base-layer benefit of Naue geogrids built in, and the option to save the calculation to a project.

Work in imperial or metric units and enter the parameters the AASHTO 1993 method needs. PavedRoad then dimensions the pavement so that it withstands the expected traffic and environmental conditions over its full service life.

Practical advantages:

  • Traffic and reliability inputs: ESAL, reliability R, standard error S0, initial and terminal serviceability (p0, pt)
  • Full pavement build-up: asphalt wearing course(s), base/subbase and an optional frost-protection layer, each with thickness, layer coefficient and drainage coefficient, plus material type
  • Subgrade defined by CBR or resilient modulus (Mr)
  • Add multiple asphalt and unbound layers to match your structure
  • Choose a cost-optimisation or service-life-optimisation strategy

PavedRoad is based on the AASHTO 1993 flexible pavement design method, combined with the measured performance of Naue geogrids. Where a project needs individual review, the Naue Engineering and Design Department (EDD) supports planners and contractors with project-specific design.

The PavedRoad - AASHTO advantage: design smarter, build stronger

Naue PavedRoad - AASHTO lets engineers plan with confidence to AASHTO 1993, save money without compromising quality, and build stronger, longer-lasting roads. By reducing unbound layer thickness with Secugrid® and Combigrid®, it lowers material and maintenance costs and cuts CO₂ - while optimised, AASHTO-compliant designs speed up planning and reduce complexity. The result is efficient, durable and more sustainable road construction, backed by Naue's engineering support.

Naue PavedRoad - AASHTO: frequently asked questions

Naue PavedRoad – AASHTO is a free online calculator in the Naue Portal DesignSuite that designs flexible (asphalt) pavements to the AASHTO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures (1993), including the base-layer benefit of Secugrid® and Combigrid®.

It follows the globally recognised AASHTO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures (1993) for flexible pavements, dimensioning the layers so the pavement withstands the expected traffic and environmental conditions over its service life.

It is designed for pavement and civil engineers, contractors and owners. Its AASHTO basis makes it particularly relevant for projects in the USA and Canada, and anywhere AASHTO guidelines are applied.

A unit system (imperial or metric), traffic data (ESAL, reliability R, standard error S0, initial and terminal serviceability p0/pt), the pavement build-up (asphalt and base/subbase layers with thickness, layer coefficient and drainage coefficient), the subgrade (CBR or Mr), and a cost- or service-life-optimisation goal.

They improve load distribution within the unbound aggregate layer. Based on measured product performance, PavedRoad quantifies how much the unbound base can be reduced at equal capacity, or how much the service life can be extended, for your inputs.

Yes. You can choose a cost-optimisation strategy to minimise material and construction cost, or a service-life-optimisation strategy to maximise durability.

You receive an AASHTO-compliant pavement design with a graphical cross-section of the build-up and a downloadable report, and you can save the calculation to a project in the Naue Portal for later use or comparison.

PavedRoad – AASHTO is free within the Naue Portal and requires a portal login. It is aimed at design engineers, planners, contractors and project owners.
