Sustainable stabilisation of slopes

An essential safety aspect of construction projects is the sustainable stabilisation of natural or constructed slopes. If the slopes are not secured, they become unstable due to natural hazards such as erosive precipitation, continuous rain, or strong winds.

How to easily protect a slope from erosion

When it comes to protecting slopes from unwanted erosion, permanent and temporary systems are the solution.

Depending on the nature of the subsoil and the local conditions, high-quality geotextile systems are particularly suitable for permanent erosion protection. Greened, 100% biodegradable natural fibre systems are ideal for temporary erosion control.

On slopes, the erosion control systems reduce particle detachment and particle transport or support particle binding or sedimentation. They act against rill and tunnel erosion as well as sheet erosion.

Landslide preparedness: More than just protection against erosion

Protection against erosion and the prevention of hazards from landslides are the main goals of erosion control systems.

Yet the protection systems have much more to offer: They become a sustainable design element in the infrastructure and the planting provides natural vegetation.

  • Valuable habitat for insects and birds

  • Lowers the climate temperature

  • Retains soil moisture

  • Binds fine dust

Slope stabilisation: Make it environmentally friendly

Slope stabilisation systems made of 100% biodegradable, untreated coir or jute fibre are particularly sustainable, quick, and easy to install and do not need to be covered.

Temporary natural coir fibre systems

The temporary systems with coir fibres are available in net, mat, or roll variants.

They delay surface run-off and stabilise the surface of the soil, significantly reducing the risk of soil erosion. The three variants of coir net can meet many different project requirements in terms of tensile strength and service life.

Typical solutions

  • Vegetating trench/brook slopes

  • Vegetating dykes

  • Securing and vegetating infrastructure slopes

Temporary natural jute fibre systems

The temporary systems with jute fibres are available in a net version.

The composition of the bast fibre means jute has a particularly high-water absorbency. Jute nets are therefore particularly suitable for semi-arid areas where water-scarce phases follow short periods of precipitation. They act as a water reservoir and gradually release the water during the dry phases.

Typical solutions

  • Vegetating aid for infrastructure

  • Protecting troughs

  • Protection against soil intrusion in still water bodies

Geotextile systems sustainably withstand even extreme weather conditions

In densely populated areas, uncontrolled erosion is one of the greatest threats. Intensified by climate change, extreme weather conditions lead to stress for people, flora and fauna and accelerate environmental change. The installation of permanent erosion control systems helps to stop erosion. Their installation is quick and easy and provides an effective solution.

Permanent erosion control with geomats

Geomats are extruded, three-dimensional erosion control mats consisting of a UV-stabilised, biologically, and chemically resistant 3D Mesh with rashel fabric, geogrid, or nonwoven fabric.

Geomats reduce the impact force of precipitation and demonstrably improve infiltration, the volume of water infiltrating into the interception storage, the transitional storage.

Typical solutions

  • Protect slopes in infrastructure projects

  • Vegetating, protecting, and securing facing systems, trench/brook beds

Permanent erosion control with geocells

Geocells are high-quality processed, areal products comprising pocket-like cells which have high UV stability and are chemically and biologically resistant. Geocells have a special surface texture which ensures optimum contact between the geocells and the filling material.

The cell walls are perforated to provide a hydraulic connection between the individual pockets and to allow excess water to drain away. The perforation therefore also provides a path for roots to grow between cells.

Typical solutions

  • Protecting slopes in infrastructure projects

  • Vegetating, protecting, and securing seals such as geomembrane or clay liners, e.g., slopes on landfill sites

  • Vegetating for rapid, long-term integration into the landscape
