Building a State-of-the-Art Football Pitch

A new artificial grass football field was constructed in Navarra, Spain, installed over the existing natural soil. To support year-round sports activities and maintain optimal playing conditions, an efficient and durable subsurface drainage concept was required.

The Challenge – Preventing Water Accumulation on a High-Use Field

Poor drainage is one of the most common issues affecting intensively used sports fields. Standing water can lead to game cancellations, surface damage and increased injury risk. For this project, the drainage system needed to deliver high permeability, stable filtration, and reliable long-term hydraulic performance. The design objective was clear: No ponding. No interruptions. Continuous play – even in heavy rain.

The Solution – Naue Secudrain® Geosynthetic Drainage System

More than 7,500 m² of Secudrain® 131 C WD 401 131 C were installed beneath the artificial turf system. Secudrain® WD drainage composites feature:

  • A wave-extruded monofilament drainage core
  • Geocomposite of two nonwoven as a separation and filtration layer
  • Thermally bonded components for maximum durability
  • Passed the Fifa approved quality test

This multifunctional product delivers separation, filtration, drainage and shock absorption in one system, replacing more complex and costly pipe and filter stone solutions.

Installation is straightforward: Secudrain® is laid directly on a completely flat, smoothed surface. The lightweight rolls include integrated nonwoven overlaps, enabling quick and easy handling on site. The system is robust, creep-resistant and offers excellent in-plane flow characteristics along with strong chemical and biological durability.

Naue Secudrain® ensures a high hydraulic capacity throughout the life of the sports field, safeguarding playability even under intense rainfall. Its shock-absorbing characteristics reduce injury risks and support natural ball behaviour.
