Water is the basis of all agricultural production and at the same time one of our most valuable resources. With increasing dry periods, fluctuating rainfall and growing irrigation demand, efficient water management is becoming more important worldwide. Modern irrigation systems make an important contribution by supplying water precisely where it is needed. However, the safe storage of available water resources is just as essential.
Water storage as the key to reliable irrigation
Irrigation and stormwater storage basins lined with HDPE geomembranes prevent water losses through seepage and create the basis for a continuous water supply throughout the growing season. In combination with modern irrigation systems, they help use water efficiently and make agricultural operations less dependent on seasonal rainfall fluctuations.
Especially in regions with limited water resources, many countries are increasingly investing in the expansion of corresponding infrastructure. One example is Morocco, where extensive programmes to modernise agriculture are continuously increasing the demand for high-performance water storage systems. At the same time, many other regions across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East show that long-term water storage is an essential component of modern irrigation concepts.
Practical example: rainwater collection basins for fruit plantations in Spain
A project in the Spanish regions of Teruel and Lleida shows what such solutions look like in practice. Large-scale rainwater collection basins were built there to secure the irrigation of fruit plantations, even during periods of low rainfall. The storage basins enable a reliable water supply throughout the growing season while also reducing dependence on external water sources.
Carbofol® HDPE geomembranes were used for long-term sealing, while Secutex® geotextiles protect the sealing system against mechanical damage and support long-term functionality. By combining both geosynthetic systems, water losses are reduced, operating costs are lowered and safe, long-term water storage is made possible.
