Safe Sea Rescue, Protected Nature: Secutex® HB 501 for the Prerow Replacement Harbour
The existing emergency harbour at Darßer Ort is indispensable for the DGzRS, but it is located in the core zone of the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park. To end the decades-long conflict between harbour operations and nature conservation, the infrastructure needed to be relocated and Prerow proved to be a strategically suitable location.
Green erosion control for strong banks: Secumat® Green randomly oriented filament layer
In the outskirts of Middelburg, an unvegetated watercourse showed signs of significant embankment erosion. Recurring runoff washed away material, causing the embankment flanks to become unstable. The banks had to be rebuilt to ensure traffic safety, flood protection, and ecological enhancement. At the same time, vegetation needed to grow quickly and be specifically supported during the sensitive establishment phase.
Seabed scour remediation at cruise ship terminal
At ABP Port of Southampton’s City Cruise Terminal, Naue geotextile sand containers have been installed to remediate scour holes in the harbour bottom and prevent further scour. Southampton is the cruise capital of the UK, with over 430 cruise calls departing from the port each year. The port is one of the busiest deep-water ports in the UK and can accommodate any size of cruise ship. The port is also home to the UK’s second largest container terminal.
Coastal defence and flood protection – Scharbeutz, Germany
The approx. 5.4 km long coastline of Scharbeutz, a popular tourist destination, features a wide sandy beach with a beach wall, promenade, road and buildings behind it. This stretch of coast is largely unprotected from storm surges from the northeast.
Secutex® Soft Rock – Geotextile wall Lubmin, Germany
At the seaside resort of Lubmin (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany), the storm surge in 2017 and two storm surges in 2019 led to a substantial decline of the dune due to erosion, so that short-term action was needed.
Secutex® Soft Rock – East Coast Sea Revetment, Singapore
As a part of Singapore’s government’s response to climate change, a sustainable coastal protection structure is required. In the few stretches of the East Coast region, the geosynthetic sand container solution has been proposed to protect the eroded beach. For this project, Secutex® Soft Rock RS has been chosen.
Irrigation of orchards in Spain – Rainwater collection basin
Efficient water storage is essential for agriculture, particularly in regions where water resources are scarce. In Spain, farmers increasingly struggle with seasonal rainfall fluctuations and prolonged droughts, making sustainable irrigation solutions crucial. To secure the water supply for their orchards, large-scale rainwater collection basins were constructed in Teruel and Lleida.
Bentofix® Green – Reducing landslides – The future of sustainable sealing
In the picturesque Vögelsberg region of Tyrol, large-scale slope failures are a constant threat. Often caused by hydro-meteorological influences, these natural hazards require innovative and sustainable solutions. The EU project OPERANDUM aims to research effective and environmentally friendly measures to reduce landslides.
Base sealing system – Rainwater Harvesting Water Sustainability Project
With a surface area of 170,000 square meters and a depth of 10 meters, this artificial lake will be the first of its kind in India. It is being built to store one billion litres of rainwater over ten months, ensuring water availability throughout the year. The lake's construction relies on advanced technology, primarily Naue Carbofol® HDPE (high-density polyethylene) geomembranes, imported from Germany due to its exceptional durability and effectiveness in preventing water seepage.
Waterside seal – Safety and efficiency in levee construction – Oder levee reinforcement, Germany
The flood defences in the Neuzeller Niederung showed considerable stability problems during the Oder floods at the turn of the millennium. Only intensive levee defence measures were able to avert the danger of a levee breach and flooding of the hinterland.
Embankment stability works for reservoir renovation project – Grassholme Reservoir
This project shows how the reservoir's future resilience to high water levels can be ensured.
Secutex® Soft Rock – Coastal defence and flood protection, Scharbeutz, Germany
The approx. 5.4 km long coastal strip of the city of Scharbeutz, which is frequently used by tourists is characterised by a wide sandy beach with a beach wall and a promenade, road and buildings behind it. This stretch of coast is largely unprotected from storm surges from the northeast. The coastal defences needed to be improved to protect the residents in this area. The state of Schleswig-Holstein subsidised this construction project.
