NAUE America and Combigrid® at GeoHalifax 2009
The renowned statistician W. Edwards Deming once said, “The result of long-term relationships is better and better quality, with lower and lower costs.” NAUE America’s latest product, Combigrid® 30/30 Q1 151GRK 3, offers just that to geogrid applications: long-term performance and ever-lower costs through project savings such as a decreased need for aggregate, lower on-site labor costs due to quick but safe installation, and lower long-term maintenance needs. NAUE’s Combigrid® was reintroduced to many of NAUE America’s oldest and newest clients as well as conference participants during GeoHalifax 2009, held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in late September.
NAUE America’s Michelle Jenkins and Tracy Tanner participated in the event and were welcomed warmly by industry players and conference organizers.
Michelle Jenkins presented a paper featuring the latest news in laboratory test results for the performance of Combigrid®. In these independent, third-party tests, Combigrid® out-performed many traditional biaxial geogrids with Combigrid’s significantly high Traffic Benefit Ratio (TBR) values. These results were well-received by participants at GeoHalifax, as many designers inquired at NAUE America’s booth for samples as well as additional information.
We would like to thank everyone who stopped by our booths in 2009, and we look forward to greater success in 2010 as we further our relationships with you and as your reinforcement projects progress. Look for our NAUE and NAUE America booths at more international events such as the 9th International Conference on Geosynthetics (Guarujá, Brazil, 23-27 May 2010) and GeoCalgary 2010 (Calgary, Alberta, Canada, 12-16 September 2010).

Wastewater Treatment Plant in Maryville, TN
In 2008, the Maryville based Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant embarked on a much-needed expansion. A 20-year design was set in place to provide significantly greater capacity for the treatment of peak storm flows, including secondary treatment and disinfection.
To stabilize the existing weak subsoils, especially under the facility’s important new oxidation ditch, the project team specified Secugrid® 30/30 Q1 geogrids as the reinforcement product. Secugrid® provides true biaxial tensile strength, which allowed the contractor great flexibility and speed during installation without any concerns of integrity. The price competitiveness and availability made Secugrid® the best choice for the project team.
Project Location: Maryville, TN
Year of Installation: 2008
Kind of Application: Subsoil Stabilization
Design: JR Waufford & Associates
Earthworks and Geogrid: Blount Excavating

Country Club Road in Williams, AZ
In 2008, Secugrid® 30/30 Q1 was used during the construction of a new roadway in Williams, AZ. Secugrid® was not the product that the project team originally selected, but when the product’s strength values and price were compared, a change in the product selection was made.
Secugrid® geogrids provided a firm geogrid layer that locked the base course in place. Because Secugrid® is engineered to transfer high tensile forces at low elongation and offers a wide range of tensile strengths, Secugrid® is suited for the most demanding projects.
But Secugrid® did more in Arizona than just reinforce soil. It helped reduce the amount of aggregate needed in the base, thus saving on aggregate acquisition, shipping and installation. The rolls are manufactured more than 2 feet wider than some peer products. These easy-to-install rolls help speed construction and reduce labor costs. The wider the grid, the more efficiently the necessary reinforcement zone can be covered. This was important in Williams, where a single roll width, even with the recommended overlap, could be used for each lane - a perfect match.
Project Location: Williams, AZ
Kind of Application: Base Course Reinforcement
Design: Woodson Engineering
Earthworks and Geogrid: McCaully Construction
Installed Product: Secugrid® 30/30 Q1

Brock White Stockyard in Edmonton, AB
When Brock White made plans to add an additional stockyard to their Edmonton facility, Combigrid® was their first choice to improve the unfavorable site conditions. The existing subgrade offered only a poor bearing capacity with coarse and fine grained materials. Combigrid®, a firmly bonded composite of a Secugrid® geogrid and a Secutex® nonwoven geotextile, both manufactured by NAUE, provided a long term and cost-effective solution to improve the subgrade situation.
Combigrid® should be used if a geosynthetic product is required to provide both reinforcement functions as well as separation, filtration and/or drainage functions between the base course and the subsoil materials. Due to its composite nature, Combigrid® can easily be rolled out in a one-step installation process. Additionally, Combigrid® allows for cost savings when designing a road structure as less gravel material and excavation are required compared to an unreinforced design.
Project Location: Edmonton, Alberta
Year of Installation: 2008
Kind of Application: Subsoil Reinforcement and Separation
Installed Product: Combigrid® 30/30 Q1 151 GRK 3

Fueling the future
With the construction of a major, new fuel tank farm and underground pipeline, Port Canaveral, Florida has quickly become a major piece of the state’s fuel security. Hurricanes in 2004 damaged fuel supply lines in Tampa on the west side of Florida. It was decided that a strong eastern fuel post was needed. Port Canaveral was the answer, and a tight, two-year timeline from approval through construction was set. Port Canaveral lies on the east coast, only 50 miles from Orlando. The port is an important hub for cargo, cruises, and federal government activity, including the nearby launch site for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). But Florida is a difficult state for engineering. The water table is high and the fine sandy and clay soils present significant challenges to sites that must support high loads. The fuel tank farm’s soils were mainly organic and had a high plasticity - yet, they needed to support tanks for 3 million barrels of fuel and heavy, daily
truck traffic. The expected stresses would exceed the soils’ normal bearing capacity. Project engineers needed to stabilize the site so that the surface activity could be sustained long term and would support future expansion. These subgrade challenges created an ideal situation for the specification and installation of geogrids—strong, polymeric grids used to
reinforce foundations, base course, walls and slopes. The project team specified Secugrid® 20/20 Q1, a polypropylene (PP) geogrid manufactured by NAUE GmbH & Co. KG. The material’s tensile load transfer ability with low elongation made
it a strong choice for stabilizing the difficult soils. Secugrid was installed between the leveled sandy subgrade and a first layer of sandy material with approximately 50 cm (20 in.) followed by a second layer of coarse gravel with about 20 cm (8 in.).
In total, 130,000 m² of geogrid were placed. [close]

| Advantages of Secugrid |
| Secugrid® geogrids are the next generation of geogrids produced with state of the art manufacturing technology, unlike any other geogrid on the marketplace today. The reinforcement element is a highly oriented polypropylene or polyester bar that is uniformly extruded and drawn to achieve a high modulus and strength at low elongations. This is combined
with NAUE patented welding technology to provide a structurally sound and stable geogrid. Secugrid® geogrids are mainly used for base reinforcement, mechanically stabilized earth walls (MSE) construction including veneer stabilization,
the segmental retaining wall market, embankment reinforcement and pile cap platforms. Biaxial geogrids are primarily used in base reinforcement applications, while the uniaxial geogrids are often used in the other markets. |

| Independent Field Study Confirms NAUE Secugrid and Combigrid Great Performance |
| NAUE GmbH & Co. KG, Germany co-sponsored the construction of test cells for an independent field study of geogrid reinforcement in roadway subgrade stabilization. The Montana Department of Transportation was the other co-sponsor. The results reveal exceptional performance by NAUE Secugrid and Combigrid materials. The data show that welded geogrids, such as NAUE Secugrid and Combigrid, perform extremely well at the bars, especially in the critical performance range of up to 5% geogrid elongation, which are critical to the success of a reinforcement geogrid’s survivability. And Secugrid’s individual bars showed a survival rate of more than 99% after significant rutting and traffic passes.
